FOCUSED ON THE CLASSROOM. COMMUNITY. TRUST.
My name is Josey Ballenger, and I am running for a trustee position on the
Traverse City Area Public Schools (TCAPS) Board of Education.
A PARENT WHO CARES. I am running for the 10,000 students in this District—and everyone who wants the best possible education for them. As a parent of two TCAPS children, I am personally invested in our schools and have volunteered as a classroom tutor for 6 years, which has given me first-hand knowledge of the challenges that teachers face on a daily basis. I am also committed to supporting our Superintendent, administrators, teachers, and staff in doing the hard work it takes to maintain our District's strengths—and to make TCAPS even greater.
A LEADER WHO SERVES. For the past 18 years, I have devoted my professional life to serving the public at the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), providing Congress with objective, nonpartisan, fact-based information to help inform decisions, develop sound public policy, and improve the status quo. In that role, I work as part of a team to evaluate the effectiveness of federal agencies’ programs, identify taxpayer savings, and make recommendations for improvement—all skills that translate well to serving on the school board. In addition, my experience serving on public and non-profit boards has enabled me to understand how to work toward positive results in an oversight role.
A TEAM PLAYER WHO LISTENS. Through my relationships in the community, I understand the importance to you of a strong public school system to support our region's quality of life, economic growth, property values, and the ability to attract and retain top talent. In representing you, I would strive to rebuild the public's trust by welcoming community input and serving with honor and integrity. A successful school board should be civil, respectful, engaged, and encourage open discussion and deliberation.
Originally from Lansing, I am a fifth-generation Michigander who spent childhood summers in the Traverse City area. In 2016, we had the opportunity to relocate here when my husband, Scott Tucker, got an offer at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. We feel fortunate that our children are growing up in TCAPS and in one of the most beautiful parts of our country.
